Preparing for this walk reveals how much it is a journey through Middle England. This term has been much used in recent times ….. almost as if ‘Middle England’ is a ‘state’ or condition to be achieved.
Here something else is intended…. The term relates to the route being followed and the revelations it provides. The preparation has underscored the degree to which a walking journey from Oxford to Birmingham really does provide for a sense of the area being geographically, historically and socially the ‘Middle-lands’.
